I remember quite well, the Digit-14; When My Genetics Interacted with the Environmental
Factors! I was studying in a Co-education School. Lots of Friends around! For the First time, my
Bestie remained absent for many days. When she was back to school, I was extremely
inquisitive to know the Reason, but She was glum and replied rather hesitatingly “I got M! and
chose to remain silent about it

                  “Now! What’s ‘M’?

“The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation.
~James E. Faust
Back from school hopping onto my Mother’s lap I asked “Mama what’s ‘M’?”I still remember
the Smile on her Face to My Question; the Real Matter of Concern for me. She promptly replied
It‘s MENSTRUATION.” And there started my journey from girlhood to womanhood!
She then Sat beside me, Explained the Reasons behind my frequent Acne outbreaks, unusual
Temper Tantrums, Progressive Increase of Breasts, Growth of Axillary & Pubic Hairs & Secretory
Vaginal mucosa-(Normal Physiologic Process supposed to happen at that Age)
She made told me Periods was a part of My Milestone that is going to add glow to my Beauty
Forever. She Instructed Me; Never to Hesitate in Speaking about ‘It’ In-front of Anyone. Gave
Me Courage to Fight with that moment when I find my cloths with Blood Stains.
I clearly remember when she handed over a Sanitary Pad & Demonstrated well on a Pant-How
to Wear it and then asked me to keep it in My School Bag. She Advised me about the
importance of menstrual hygiene and that I should explain the same my friends
No Wonder! My Growth Hormone was Playing Well for My Pubertal Development
Few days later, My Neuronal Networks got Complexed & then ‘THE DAWN’🥰
Despite the detailed orientation, I used to face; Strange Fears, Shame, Confusions & Loss of
Self-esteem during My Periods due to lack of Social Support & Impact of Taboos!
My Father started talking to me about general issues concerning women workplace safety,
economic empowerment of women, domestic violence, societal obligations of women etc, this
encouraged Me to Face Challenges resulting from Social Stigma during my periods!
My Brother would walk me to the medical store to buy Sanitary Pads and this really helped me
gain sense of empowerment & Gender Equality. Menstruation had changed nothing! I was no
less than boys of my age.
I was Never Restricted to Wear Short dresses/Trousers & Never Banned from Socializing with
Friends. I was always Allowed to Touch Food Items or Sleep on Beds & Sit with my family.
Daddy’s Little Girl ,never Compromised in maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle Always Undifferentiated!
As a result, I was Never Deprived of Quality Education & Eventually I learned to Manage ‘It’ with
Dignity & with No Fear
“The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family.”
~Lee Iacocca
Economy of The Country; Girls Too Contribute! Menstrual Taboos, Lack of Adequate Guidance & Emotional Support creates Silence in Young
Girls; which will Continue into Adulthood, thereby Giving Way to Gender Inequality & Dis-empowerment

Time to Change Our Attitude; Time to Accept menstruation within family!
